Lords win sixth in a row on Friday night

OSHAWA, ON - Improving to 11-1 on the season, the Durham Lords women's basketball team go into the weekend on a high note with a 69-50 win over the St. Lawrence Surge.

Durham got the go ahead early with a 5-0 lead, holding the Surge scoreless for over three and a half minutes to begin the game. Eventually, the Lords would lead 22-8 after one quarter of play.

St. Lawrence bounced back in the second quarter as they outscored the hosts 15-13, but it would only shrink the gap ever so slightly. The Lords had a 35-23 lead going into the locker rooms for the halftime break.

Brianna Morrison (Oshawa, ON) went a perfect 3-for-3 in the third quarter, including 1-for-1 from beyond the arc, to lift the Lords to a 54-40 lead with 10 minutes left to play.

Durham played a suffocating style of defence in the fourth quarter, forcing the Surge to shoot 11.8% in the final frame. Ultimately, the Lords cruised to a 69-50 victory.

The Lords took advantage of every opportunity from the free throw line, going 7-for-7. Durham mostly benefited from a significant difference in field goal percentage, finishing with 44.6% while the visitors went for 24.3%.

Also dominant in the paint, the Lords scored 50 of their 69 points on Friday evening from that area of the floor.

Shooting 10-for-16, Morrison was the team leader in points with a total of 22 in 23 minutes of play. Morrison also added four assists, three rebounds and a pair of steals.

Kendra Oliver (Ajax, ON) had herself a night with 15 points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal.

In the paint, Hannah Oke (Brooklin, ON) was always dependable to grab a rebound with a team-leading seven, followed closely behind by Emily Glendinning (Plattsville, ON) with six.

The Lords are back at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Centre (CRWC) in a week on Friday, February 10 for their final home game as the Centennial Colts come to town for a 6:00 PM tip-off. The night will begin with the celebration of our graduating seniors.
