Graduating Seniors Day sees Lords back in the win column

OSHAWA, ON - Earning their way back into the win column on a day to celebrate our graduating seniors, the Durham Lords women's volleyball team defeat the visiting Centennial Colts in a three sets.

The first set was a quick one with the Lords taking the frame by a 25-9 score. Cassidy Unrau (Port Coquitlam, BC) recorded five service aces in the opening set alone. Coming into the day, her season high for service aces in an entire match was four.

Durham would generate another mountain of a lead that would prove to be too difficult to overcome in the second set, leading by as much as 11 for much of the middle portion of the set. The Lords found themselves on another hot streak, going on an 8-0 run to win the set 25-8.

Centennial continued to battle hard into the third set, reaching double-digit points and proving they still had fight left in them. However, it would continue to be a favourable afternoon for the hosts as the Lords won the third set 25-14.

Jessica Joensen (Brooklin, ON) once again stood out with nine kills on 19 total attempts to go along with three service aces, two blocked shots and a dig.

Katie Stewart (Gananoque, ON) finished the afternoon with five kills on 10 attempts, pairs of service aces and assists, and three digs. Amanda Larsen (Toronto, ON) and Mia Hildebrandt (Winnipeg, MB) were also strong contributors with four and three kills, respectively.

Brooke Young (Chestermere, AB) accounted for the vast majority of Durham's assists, recording 22 for the match. Young was also the team leader in digs with five.

Durham was incredibly strong on serves, registering 13 aces led by the five from Unrau, along with three from Joensen and a pair from Stewart.

The Lords will finish the regular season on the road next week beginning with a trip to Canadore to play the Panthers on February 10th before rounding out the schedule at Georgian on February 11th.
 

GRADUATING SENIORS

#1 Aislinn Pedersen

Pedersen is in her final semester in the Fitness and Health Promotion program at Durham College. The 5'10" Hamilton-native to date has 58 digs, 18 kills, 11 assists, seven service aces and a blocked shots.

#6 Jessica Joensen

Joensen recently became the Durham College women's volleyball all-time leader in points, surpassing the 771 tallied by Amanda Doris between 2005-2010. In 2022-23, Joensen is top-10 in the OCAA in kills per set (4th), kills (5th), points (7th) and points per set (7th). The Paralegal student from Brooklin first came to Durham College in 2016-17 and forever has her place in the history books.

#12 Brooke Young

Young came to Durham from Chestermere, Alberta, and has been an integral part of the team since 2021-22. A playmaker, Young averages 7.26 assists per set - good enough for sixth in Ontario. This season, she also has 18 digs, 11 kills and eight service aces.

#13 Devyn Fraser

Fraser is a long-time dual athlete at Durham College, competing on the golf team as well as women's volleyball, and was named co-female athlete of the year at Durham in 2021-22. The Advertising - Digital Media Management student from Uxbridge student currently has 53 digs and 15 assists in 15 matches played.

#17 Katie Stewart

Stewart is an International Business Management student from Gananoque who has earned her place as 6th in the province in kills per set with 2.86, as well as 8th in points per set with 3.5. Only behind Joensen, Stewart is one of two players on the team at this point in the season that has surpassed 100 kills.

#20 Mia Hildebrandt

Hildebrandt, the other co-female athlete of the year from 2021-22, has been a force for the Lords this season. With 0.73 blocks per set and a total of 30 blocked shots on the season, she currently sits 5th and 7th in the province in those categories respectively. Most notably, Hildebrandt holds a hitting percentage of .380, the third best in the OCAA. Hildebrandt was another Western Canadian recruit, coming to Durham College from Winnipeg, Manitoba to study in the Sport Management program.
