Lords complete weekend sweep with two wins against Sheridan

MISSISSAUGA, ON - The Durham College men's baseball team completed a four game sweep on opening weekend, hitting the road to play Sheridan and winning in both games.

Sheridan scored the first two runs of the game in the first affair with one-off scores in the first and third innings. Durham found their offensive stride halfway through the game, scoring three runs in the fourth inning followed up by two runs in the fifth to make it 5-2.

The Bruins clawed their way back to force extra innings and the Lords took advantage of it. In the top of the eighth, Durham scored eight runs to take a 13-5 lead - an outing that Sheridan did not have a response for in the bottom half of the inning.

Ryan Mattes (Whitby, ON) scored three times, finishing the game 3-for-5 at the plate with all hits leading to runs. Zach Rivers (Oshawa, ON), Cole Cote (Welland, ON) and Tristan Deslauriers (Oshawa, ON) also put up multi-hit performances in the game.

On the mound, Johnny Halls (Newmarket, ON) went 5.0 innings, striking out seven batters and conceding only two runs. Jacob Mahoney (Toronto, ON) pitched 3.0 innings, striking out four while seeing three runs against.

The second game did not need extra innings and in fact finished in only five as the Lords cruised to a 16-1 win.

Durham were on the board early with two runs in the first inning before exploding for nine more in the second and three more in the third to take an early 14-0 lead.

Sheridan responded with a run in the bottom half of the third but the Lords continued to pile on with two more runs in the fourth, triggering an early end to the game through five innings.

Cote and Rivers accounted for a combined six runs in the game, with Cote a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with four RBI's.

Nick King (Whitby, ON) pitched all five innings on the mound, striking out 10.

The Lords return to Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium on Saturday, September 16 for a doubleheader against the Fanshawe Falcons at 1:00 & 3:30 PM.
