SCARBOROUGH, ON - The Durham College women's basketball team have now won twice in as many games to open the winter semester, defeating the Centennial Colts 65-54.
Centennial played a very strong opening quarter, more than doubling the points scored by the Lords as the Colts put 15 points on the board while holding the Lords to only seven.
Durham's offence came to life in the second quarter, sparked by Kayla Khodra (Toronto, ON) who surpassed the team's first quarter total alone, scoring eight points. The Colts would hold onto the lead going into halftime up 33-26.
Coming out of the break, the Lords went on a 12-0 run early in the third quarter to take the lead for the first time since the first. The Lords eventually matched their second quarter total with another 19 points, while playing a suffocating style of defence that held the hosts to only 10 points.
That outstanding second half defending continued into the fourth and final quarter, as did the offence that was firing on all cylinders.
Playing from behind, the Colts were held to only 11 points in the final quarter and the Lords could not scoring, adding a game-high 20 points to cap off their strongest quarter and win their second consecutive game.
Khodra finished the afternoon with a double-double, registering 28 points and 11 rebounds, a season-high for the player in both categories.
Camryn Wood (Uxbridge, ON) also saw a season-high game in points with 11, also adding a highly impressive 15 rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists. Onika Leveridge (Scarborough, ON) and her 10 points was one short of her season-high, while grabbing 14 boards, a feat accomplished for the second time this season. Leveridge generating a lot of action down the floor in her hometown with eight assists and five steals.
With the win, the Lords have built their first multi-game winning streak of the season.
Collectively, the Lords and their 54 rebounds and 20 assists were the most recorded in a game this season for both categories.
Durham women's basketball are back on the court on Wednesday, January 24 in Kingston against the St. Lawrence Surge. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
