OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham Lords put on a show Friday, sweeping a doubleheader against the Sheridan Bruins at Kinsmen Stadium with a 13-3 win in the first game, followed by a walk-off 6-5 win.
The Lords came out swinging in the first game with a relentless offence that racked up 16 hits in the game.
Durham registered eight runs in the third inning, creating a mountain of a lead that proved too difficult to climb for the Bruins.
On his senior's night, Ryan Mattes was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs and two RBI's. Zach Rivers, Griffin Oliver, Nick King and Evan Chong all also had multi-hit games with two. Rivers led the team in runs scored with three.
On the mound, Mark Baxter went all five innings and picked up his fourth win of the season, striking out four batters along the way.
The second game looked like it could also get out of hand early when the Lords scored three runs in the bottom of the second for an early lead, but the Bruins found some momentum.
A stronger pitching game from Sheridan held the Lords without any additional runs until the seventh, and on the way there their offence scored five runs for their first lead of the game.
In the bottom of the seventh, Connor Godwin scored on an RBI double hit by Zach Rivers, who would later score on an RBI double hit by James Aronowicz to send the game into extra innings.
After 1-2-3 top of the eighth, the Lords were back up to bat in extras. With Quintin Earle on second and Mattes in a position to score on third base, Aaron Sprague hit a single to end the game with a walk-off, winning 6-5.
With the regular season wrapped up, the Lords will go into the 2024 OCAA Men's Baseball Championship having won nine of their last 10 games.
Securing second place, the Lords automatically advance to day two of the championship, which will be hosted by Lambton College in Sarnia from October 17-19.
