OSHAWA, Ont. - The gold medal game of the 2024 OCAA Women's Softball Championship will feature the Durham Lords on Saturday afternoon after two wins on Friday.
In the first game of the day, the Lords matched up with the Conestoga Condors for the quarter-final round.
With Jessica Greene in position to score, Peyton Jones hit a RBI single in the bottom of the first to open the scoring and take an early 1-0 lead.
The second inning saw lots of scoring, beginning with Vanessa Ng who stole home to double the lead before Grace Hearns hit a triple to send Natalie Clemens and Emily Taylor crossing home for a 4-0 lead. Hearns would later score from third on a wild pitch.
Still in the second inning, Jessica Benz hit a home run to left field, extending Durham's lead to six.
In the bottom of the third, Jocelyn Shelton stole home for her fist run of the game. An inning later, Jones and Greene would score on a single hit by Shelton.
The game came to an end in the fifth inning off of the bat of Hearns when Emily Rowe scored on an RBI double, making it 10-0 in the fifth inning to trigger the mercy rule.
With a direct spot in the gold medal game on the line, the Lords had to first get past the defending champion St. Clair Saints on the way.
Jayden Bennett hit a two-RBI double in the opening frame, allowing Benz and Hearns to put the first two runs of the game on the board.
In the fourth inning, the Lords added two more runs as Taylor and Natalie Clemens extended the lead to four. Greene added a fifth run in the sixth inning.
St. Clair avoided the shutout in the top of the seventh, scoring one run with the bases loaded before Jones struck out the final batter, securing a 5-1 victory.
Greene went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run and an RBI. Jones pitched a complete game, striking out eight batters and only allowing a single run in 7.0 innings.
Durham will advance straight to the gold medal game while St. Clair will battle it out with the Humber Hawks in the bronze medal game, looking to force a rematch with the Lords.
The gold medal game is scheduled for 2:30 PM on Saturday at Babcock Field.
