OSHAWA, ON - The Durham College women's volleyball team are through to the quarter-finals in the 2024 OCAA Women's Volleyball Championship after defeating the Redeemer Royals in straight sets during their home qualifier on Saturday evening.
It was a close opening set with only a small handful of points separating the two sides through the first half of it. Durham found themselves on a 6-1 run halfway through the set to take a 17-10 lead and wouldn't look back - eventually winning it 25-19.
Redeemer went ahead early in the second set, scoring the first three points before the Lords responded back with five of the next six points.
The Lords found themselves down by as many as six points but refused to let the momentum stay with the visitors as they powered forward with nine consecutive points to the delight of the crowd.
Trailing by one with a 19-18 score line, the Lords ended the set on a 7-2 run to take it 25-21.
Durham took an early lead in the third and refused to let it go. While the Royals did their best to keep it close, they could not keep their season alive as the Lords won it 25-19 to complete the sweep.
Aislinn Pedersen (Hamilton, ON) had 16.0 points on the night, leading the team offensively. Through three sets, she finished the night with nine kills and two blocked shots, along with 11 digs. Chelsea Oke (Brooklin, ON) was the team-leader in digs with 12, also putting up eight kills and a service ace for 9.0 points.
Amanda Larsen (Toronto, ON) was also in double-digit territory with 10.0 points, recording three kills, three solo blocks and four service aces.
Also a standout talent in the game, Chanel Ethier (Ottawa, ON) registered eight kills, six digs and four assists. Brooke Young (Chestermere, AB) had 20 assists on the night for the Lords.
The Lords advance to the second round of the postseason and will make the trip to Windsor to take on the St. Clair Saints next weekend. Stay tuned for a date and time to be announced soon.
