Lords advance to final four at 2024 OCAA Women's Volleyball Championship

WINDSOR, ON - For the fifth consecutive season, the Durham College women's volleyball team are into the final four. On Saturday, the Lords went into St. Clair and won their quarter-final match in five sets.

Durham made a statement in the opening set. Despite trailing 10-9 at one time, the Lords went on a 15-3 run to finish the first set with a massive 25-12 victory to give themselves an edge right out of the gates.

Tides turned in the second set and the Saints nearly copied Durham's first set performance. Close knit through the first half of the set, St. Clair who once were behind by a 12-11 score, scored 13 of the next 14 points in the set to win it 25-13.

St. Clair went ahead two sets to one with a 25-17 win in the third but the visiting Lords would force a fifth and final set after taking the fourth 25-15.

Things looked off to a good start for the west division hosts when they went ahead 4-2 in the fifth set. Later on, an attack error from the Saints would put the Lords up 8-6 halfway through the set when the two teams switched sides of the court.

The Lords looked even better on the other side of the net, scoring four of the first five points in the second half of the fifth.

With the score 14-10, the Lords thought they had won it with a block and came out to celebrate before realizing the point was awarded to St. Clair, forcing the Lords to have to wait three more serves to begin their celebrations.

A block by the Saints and an attack error by the Lords put St. Clair within two points, however a service error was the final nail in the coffin on the Saints' season as the Lords won the fifth set 15-12.

Aislinn Pedersen (Hamilton, ON) led the team in points with 16.0 after registering 12 kills, three services aces and a solo block. She also added an impressive 15 digs to her total for the day.

Amanda Larsen (Toronto, ON) was incredible at the net, blocking five shots and smashing down four kills in critical moments to keep her team in the game when they needed it.

Reigning athlete of the week Chelsea Oke (Brooklin, ON) had a team-leading 17 digs, along with 10 kills and one service ace.

Chanel Ethier (Ottawa, ON) was also a standout player with nine kills and seven digs.

Brooke Young (Chestermere, AB) had 30 assists through five sets, as well as 12 digs and two service aces.

For the fifth consecutive season, the Durham Lords are one of the final four teams remaining at the OCAA championship. The Lords will play the Seneca Sting in the semi-final round at Seneca College on Friday, February 23 at a time to be determined.
