Women's volleyball will play for bronze after semifinal loss

KING CITY, ON - The Durham College women's volleyball team will play for bronze on Saturday after losing in straight sets to the Seneca Sting.

Durham opened the final four stage of the 2024 OCAA Women's Volleyball Championship against the hosts, and with a full crowd behind them the Sting showed off their home court advantage early in the first set.

The Lords were forced to take a timeout after Seneca went ahead 6-0 to begin the match and eventually scored a seventh unanswered before a service error put the Lords on the board for the first time on the day.

Despite trailing by as much as 17-5, the Lords refused to go down without a fight and ended the set on a 9-8 run - although losing 25-14.

Set number two began a little more favourably for the Lords, scoring six of the first 11 points. But the Sting once again found their rhythm, doubling Durham's score with a 20-10 score reading before finishing the job with a 25-12 win in the second set.

The third set was the closest of the day. All tied up at 18 apiece, it looked as if the Lords had a real chance to keep their season alive and force a fourth set.

However, the hosts got hot at the right time and a 7-2 run for the Sting won them the third set 25-20 to complete the sweep.

Chelsea Oke (Brooklin, ON) earned player of the match honours for Durham. She finished the night with 8.0 points, recording six kills, one service ace, one solo block and eight digs.

Aislinn Pedersen (Hamilton, ON) and Chanel Ethier (Ottawa, ON) each registered 15 digs. Pedersen was tied with Oke for the team lead in kills with six, also blocking one shot.

Brooke Young (Chestermere, AB) finished the day with 14 assists through three sets.

The Lords will finish off their season on Saturday with the bronze medal match scheduled for 2:30 PM against the loser of the Loyalist vs. Humber semifinal.
