OSHAWA, Ont. - As regular season play resumed following the winter break, the Durham Lords fell short against the Loyalist Lancers in women's basketball by a 54-44 score despite a determined effort.
The Lords showcased their grit and determination from the opening whistle, despite Loyalist's early 12-point lead in the first quarter.Â
Durham tightened their defensive efforts and stayed within striking distance through the second and third quarters. A balanced scoring effort and hard-nosed defence helped the Lords keep the game competitive, but untimely turnovers proved to be their Achilles' heel.
Emma Bergen led the Lords with a standout performance in her first game back with the squad, posting 12 points and grabbing eight rebounds while playing a game-high 38 minutes. Bergen's ability to control the boards and provide second-chance opportunities was key to Durham's offensive push.
Onika Leveridge added to the Lords' physical presence inside, tallying nine defensive rebounds to go along with five points.Â
Emily Balkissoon, Telia Campbell and Taige Matosas-Adderley chipped in with seven points each, with Campbell leading the team in assists with six.
The Lords found success in the paint, where they scored 32 of their 44 points. Durham were also more efficient than the Lancers on shooting from the floor with a 39.1% field goal percentage.
Durham will now continue preparations for their next game as the Lords travel to the nation's capital to take on the Algonquin Wolves on Friday, January 17 at 6:00 PM.
