Men's curling team open season in Peterborough with two wins

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - The Durham Lords opened their competitive season with a strong showing at the Trent Bonspiel last weekend, earning wins over Algoma University and Ontario Tech University before closing the day with a tight loss to the University of Ottawa.

It marked the first event of the year for the men's squad, who were bolstered by Athlete of the Week Vanessa Ng stepping in to complete the lineup.

The Lords set the tone early with a decisive 10-5 win over Algoma, their first meeting with the Thunderbirds since the re-introduction of the varsity curling program.

Durham carried that momentum into the afternoon draw and earned a 7-3 victory over Ontario Tech, beating the Ridgebacks for the second straight year at this event.

The team continued to build ends with patience and control, capitalizing on well-managed stones and disciplined shot selection.

In the evening matchup, the Lords pushed Ottawa in another first-time meeting but fell 7-4 to the Gee-Gees.

The Lords now turn their attention to next weekend's University of Toronto Intercollegiate Bonspiel in Thornhill. The men return to the ice looking to build off their opening-week success with matchups against TMU, Toronto and Mohawk, while the event also marks the season debut for the women's team as they take on Algoma, Humber and TMU.
