The Durham College Athletic Department is deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of former men's volleyball head coach Dave Dobson. A pillar of the Lords community, Dobson's impact on Durham College athletics and the sport of volleyball in the region is immeasurable.
Â
Born in Pembroke in 1953, Dobson first joined Durham College in 1977 as the head coach of the men's volleyball program. Over the next decade, he built a powerhouse program that regularly contended for Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) championships, highlighted by a gold medal victory in 1987. Under his leadership, the Lords also won multiple OCAA silver and bronze medals.
His coaching excellence was honoured league-wide as he won four OCAA Coach of the Year awards. This feat was recognized as one of Durham College athletics 50 greatest achievements in 2017.
Â
Known affectionately as "Mr. Volleyball" in the Durham Region, Dobson's contributions to the sport were not limited to his time on the sidelines. His dedication to student-athlete development played a crucial role in establishing Durham College as a nationally ranked volleyball program. He was also instrumental in launching and expanding the widely successful DC Summer Volleyball Camp for children, fostering the next generation of players.
On April 4th, 2003, Dobson received the highest honour as he was inducted into the Durham College Sports Hall of Fame. The annual rookie of the year award for men's volleyball is also named in honour of Dobson's contributions to the program.
Â
Beyond coaching, Dobson was a driving force in supporting Durham College Athletics through his involvement in major events, host committees, and fundraising initiatives. He played key roles in organizing multiple CCAA National Championships hosted by Durham College between 1990 and 2003, ensuring the school's reputation for excellence on and off the court.
Â
"The Durham College community is heartbroken by the passing of Dave," said
Scott Dennis, Director of Athletics and Recreation. "Dave had an impact on so many Durham College student-athletes over the years, and his dedication to the program was unmatched. Even though he lived over three hours away, Dave would attend as many events as he could to cheer on the Lords. We will miss his smiling face around the gym and his contributions to the program will never be forgotten."
Â
The entire Durham College community extends its heartfelt condolences to Dave Dobson's family, friends, former players, and all those whose lives he touched. His passion for the game and unwavering commitment to student-athletes leave a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.
