OSHAWA, Ont. - Kathy Orellana, a point guard from Whitby, has officially signed with the varsity women's basketball team at Durham College for the 2025-26 season.
Kathy began her basketball journey in the 2021-22 season, playing for New Horizon Rep and continued to make her mark in the sport.
She played for Durham City Rep in the 2022-23 season, earning a Division 1 silver medal with the team. She continued to excel while playing for Durham City Juel in the 2023-24 season and also showcased her skills in the summer of 2023 by winning a gold medal at the Just for Her tournament.
In her Grade 12 year, Orellana played for CODE Sports Academy and led the Brooklin High School Senior Girls' Basketball Team to their first-ever appearance in the LOSSA Championship, securing a silver medal. She averaged 15 points per game during that season and was named the team's MVP.
"I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to play in a country that provides amazing support for student-athletes," said Orellana, who was born and raised in Guatemala.
Head coach Sherlon Chance is thrilled to have Orellana join the team and is excited to see what she will bring to the court this season.
"We are thrilled to welcome Kathy to our program," said Chance. "Her addition strengthens our roster and we anticipate her making an immediate impact as we strive for success in the upcoming season."
Orellana will be studying in the Pre-Health Sciences program at Durham College in September.
