OSHAWA, Ont. - The Campus Recreation & Wellness Centre was lively for Jersey Night as the Lords came up short in a hard-fought battle against the Algonquin Wolves by a 58-44 score.
Algonquin jumped out to an early lead, holding Durham to five points in the opening quarter. The Lords responded with their best stretch in the second, outscoring the Wolves 16-11 in the frame to briefly take the lead midway through the quarter.
Durham's defence forced turnovers and created extra possessions, allowing the hosts to head into halftime down just three.
The third quarter stayed close as Algonquin were only able to extend their lead by two points. Algonquin further controlled the tempo in the fourth, closing out the game with a strong finish to seal the win.
Sarah-Jane Laplante led all scorers for Durham with 25 points, knocking down five three-pointers while adding five steals and three rebounds.
Beatrice Johnson recorded a double-digit rebound performance with 10 boards and chipped in five points, while Aiesha Lewis and Kathy Orellana each added four points and Lewis grabbed seven rebounds.
Durham finished with 42 rebounds and forced 22 turnovers, but shooting efficiency proved to be the difference on the night.
The Lords are back on the court on Tuesday, January 27 as Durham travels to Seneca to take on the Sting at 6 p.m.
