FROM THE THRONE: Alisia Lush

Dive into "From The Throne" to explore the personal reflections of players and coaches that highlight their personal journeys, pivotal moments and behind-the-scenes stories that shape their careers. These features paint a personal portrait of the people behind their accomplishments.

When I moved from my hometown of Lyalta, Alberta to Ontario, it was a leap of faith.

I was leaving the familiar behind to chase my dreams.

What I found at Durham College was more than just a school or a volleyball team.

I found a second family.

From the moment I set foot on campus, I could feel the warmth and support of the DC community.

It was the kind of environment I needed to grow not only as a player but as a person.

ADJUSTING TO A NEW LIFE
Moving across the country was a big adjustment.

I had never been away from home for so long, let alone lived so far from my family.

But I had to take that leap and see where it would lead me.

Fortunately, I was surrounded by an incredibly supportive community.

There were good days and bad days, but my friends were always there to lift me up.

Their support made the transition easy, turning what could have been a daunting experience into an exciting adventure.

THE CONNECTIONS
When I reflect on my five years at Durham, what stands out the most are the connections and friendships I've built.

My teammates aren't just people I play volleyball with; they're my best friends, my roommates, and my confidants.

We've shared countless memories, both on and off the court.

We had Coach Katie and Coach Cass in my previous years. They also had a huge impact on my journey here. Our Athletic Therapists, our Strength & Conditioning coach Manny. Everybody is so supportive.

And then Tony, of course, he's always been an understanding, supportive person. Alex kind of took on a parental role while I was away from home and I was really able to build a strong connection with him.

These relationships have been the backbone of my journey, providing me with a support system that I could rely on, especially being so far away from home.

I'm grateful for every single person who has played a role in my time at Durham.

THE TRANSITION
One of the most challenging moments of my journey was taking on the role of team manager.

Due to my demanding nursing schedule, I had to step back from playing for part of the season.

It was a difficult transition, going from the court to the sidelines.

But I had the privilege of working closely with Coach Jess, who understood this transition better than anyone.

She became a mentor and a friend, and we had so much fun sitting together during practices and games.

Her support and understanding made all the difference.

Each coach and teammate has left an indelible mark on my journey, pushing me to become the best version of myself.

THE FINAL SEASON
As I approached my final season of eligibility, a mix of emotions swept over me.

It's a strange feeling, knowing that something that has been a part of your life for so long is coming to an end.

But at the same time, it's a joyful feeling.

I wouldn't trade the experiences and memories I've made for anything.

I'm grateful for the opportunity to play with this amazing group of girls and work under such dedicated coaches.

Finishing my collegiate career at Durham College is a bittersweet milestone, but I'm ready to embrace whatever comes next.

MOVING FORWARD
Academically, I pursued a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Ontario Tech University.

I'm proud of the person I've become through this program.

Nursing has completely transformed my perspective on life, teaching me to appreciate every moment and live in the present.

It's a challenging field, but it has shaped me into someone who cherishes the importance of caring for others.

Looking ahead, my plan is to complete my nursing program, pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), and officially become a registered nurse.

I envision starting my nursing career here, gaining valuable experience, and making a difference in the lives of patients.

Eventually, I may consider returning home, but for now, my focus is on building a successful career in nursing.

Durham College has been a significant chapter in my life, and I'm excited to apply the knowledge and skills I've acquired as I move forward

It was a place where I found a second family, overcame challenges, and grew as a person.

I'm grateful for the support and love I received during my time here, and I'm ready to take on the world with the foundation I built at Durham.
