OCAA Women's Volleyball: Seneca defeated Durham 3-0

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College women's volleyball team were defeated 3-0 by Seneca Thursday night at the CRWC. Set scores were 10-25, 17-25 and 13-25.

The loss snapped Durham's three-game winning streak as they fall to 3-3 on the year while Seneca improves to 5-1.

The Lords appeared out of rhythm in their match as errors and inconsistent play were the cause for defeat. Neither the Lords nor Sting recorded more than 10 kills in a set illustrating the lack of points scored through traditional offence.

The first set saw Seneca pull away as Durham stumbled out of the gate. Miscommunication allowed the Sting to find holes in the Lords defence and jump out to a 16-7 lead. Durham looked to regroup with a timeout but continued to slip despite the strong efforts of setter Meghan Renwick (Brooklin, Ont.) who finished the three set match with a total of 14 assists, two kills and three digs.

The struggles continued early in the second set for the Lords, however, they did regroup and draw to within one point trailing 6-7 early. Excellent play was seen by Emily Gilbert (Whitby, Ont.) who looked to shore up the Durham defence and led the team with seven digs in the game. Gilbert also sparked an impressive rally for the Lords which ended with an exceptionally placed ball in the back corner. Nevertheless, the comeback was halted by a Sting timeout which allowed Seneca to recover and maintain the lead.

The third set began with a bang for the Lords as Madison Rae-White (Cobourg, Ont.) improved from her struggles in the first two sets by converting three booming kills early. Rae-White finished the game with four total kills, second to Jessica Broad (Courtice, Ont.) who again led the team recording eight. However, the Sting continued to find holes in the Lords defence and garnered several aces to establish another lead that Durham could not even.

The Lords will look to renew their winning ways when they travel to face Canadore on Saturday, November 23.
