Durham College set to host the 26th annual Adidas Cup
OSHAWA, Ont. – The field for the Durham College women's volleyball Adidas Cup has been set with 12 teams from Ontario taking part in the tournament.
The 26th running of the event will serve off the new year of OCAA women's volleyball with play set to start on Friday, January 3 at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Centre (CRWC) at noon. Play will continue through Saturday, January 4 with the championship final scheduled slated for 6 p.m.
"We are very excited to welcome 12 great teams from Ontario to the tournament," said Durham College athletic director
Ken Babcock. "What a great way to start the new year and celebrate one of the longest running collegiate volleyball tournaments in Canada."
The tournament will also be a preview of the OCAA women's volleyball championship, which will take place at Durham from February 20-22, 2014.
Friday's action will consist of round robin play that carries into Saturday. After each team plays five matches, the medal round will begin at 3 p.m.
Led by sixth year head coach Shane Christopher, the Durham Lords are featured in pool A. They will be joined by the Loyalist Lancers (Belleville, Ont.), Mohawk Mountaineers (Hamilton, Ont.), Conestoga Condors (Kitchener, Ont.), Canadore Panthers (North Bay, Ont.) and George Brown Huskies (Toronto, Ont.). Over the past 14 years, the Lords made their only championship final appearance in 2003-04, where they went on to defeat the Cambrian Golden Shield 2-1 to win the cup.
Pool B will consist of the Georgian Grizzlies (Barrie, Ont.), Algonquin Thunder (Ottawa, Ont.), St. Clair Saints (Windsor, Ont.), Cambrian Golden Shield (Sudbury, Ont.), Fleming Knights (Peterborough, Ont.) and Sheridan Bruins (Oakville, Ont.).
There will be a new champion crowned as Bois de Bologne of Montreal was unable to attend and defend their title.
The Adidas Cup has become a highly regarded tournament in the volleyball community and is one of the biggest and most anticipated invitational tournaments on the CCAA sports calendar.
