Lords undone by errors against Canadore
OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham College women's volleyball team lost in straight sets Saturday afternoon to Canadore College at the CRWC. Set scores were 25-19, 25-22 and 25-19.
The Lords attempted to battle through a string of mistakes, but due to the inconsistent play were never able to develop any momentum throughout the match.
Durham was able to quickly jump out to an early lead in the first set but strong net play from Canadore's Carrie Ryan and Liarra Marchand allowed the Panthers to regroup and pull ahead.
This momentum continued for Canadore into the second set, however the Lords showed a spark late in the set that nearly saw them even the match. With Durham trailing 23-19, impressive plays from Natasha Jakovljevic (Oshawa, Ont.) and Alysha Johnson (Whitby, Ont.) allowed the Lords to cut the lead to one and force a Panthers timeout. The timeout proved to work for the Panthers though, as they were able to capture the final two points necessary to win the set. Jakovljevic would end the match leading the Lords with eight kills, two aces and two blocked shots while Johnson collected 18 assists and 11 digs.
The third and final set saw Canadore establish a lead and maintain throughout. Durham saw strong effort from Jessica Broad (Courtice, Ont.) in the final stanza as she tried to lead her team out of the deficit, but the Lords day ended early. Broad finished the match with seven kills and two service aces.
With the loss, Durham remains in fifth place in the OCAA East Region with a record of 7-7, while Canadore pulls further ahead of them with a record of 9-4 to remain in fourth.
The Lords will look to right the ship as they welcome Georgian College on Thursday, January 30 to the CRWC for Senior's Night. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
