OCAA Women's Basketball Quarterfinals: Mohawk defeated Durham 64-50

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Durham College women's basketball team could not upset the hosts at the OCAA women's basketball championship as the Mohawk Mountaineers came up with a 64-50 win over the Lords in front of the hometown faithful.
Five different players made three-point shots in the first quarter of Mohawk's win making up 15 of their 20 points.
To start the second quarter, the Mountaineers implemented a full-court press and got in the way of Durham's cross-court pass attempts to hold the Lords to just six points in the period. Mohawk also turned their good defence into offence, finding more ways to score than just behind the arc. Offensive rebounds and a good transition game helped the Mountaineers pull ahead 37-20 at the halftime break.
Durham started to press on defence to start the third quarter and slowly crept back into the game after a couple of forced turnovers. Mohawk adjusted, however, and was able to pass around the pressure to hang onto an eight-point third quarter lead.
Mohawk's defence continued to stifle the Lords offence in the fourth quarter, getting their arms into the passing lanes, causing tipped passes and forcing turnovers.
Mohawk's player of the game and leading scorer was Jen Abella who finished with 16 points and three assists. Her sister Rachelle led the team with five assists.
Kauri LaFontaine (Whitby, Ont.) was named player of the game for Durham, scoring a team high 12 points as she was 6 for 11 shooting with 11 rebounds.
Kelsey Hare (Whitby, Ont.) chipped in with 11 points.
Turnovers were a key to victory for Mohawk as they forced 39 by Durham which included 19 steals.
Durham will play Sheridan in the bronze medal quarterfinals at 3 p.m. on Friday.
