Big inning hurts Durham baseball OCAA Men's Baseball: Humber defeated Durham 11-9 OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College men's baseball team could not overcome a seven run deficit as the Humber Hawks picked up an 11-9 win in the first meeting of the season between the two clubs on Wednesday evening.
Durham shot out to a 4-0 lead after two innings, but allowed eight runs in the third as the Hawks doubled up Durham. Humber would tack on one run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to extend their lead to 11-4.
Showing their resiliency, Durham bounced back with five runs in the sixth inning and would have the go ahead run at the plate. However, Humber pitcher Tyler Goertzen would come in and close out the inning and shutout the Lords in the seventh to give the Hawks the two-run victory.
Lords pitchers gave up too many free passes early in the game as Humber had seven walks that turned into runs during the Hawks' third inning.
Wesley Hardwick (Toronto, Ont.) was charged with the loss as he was pulled in the third inning after allowing seven runs off of six hits. Jordon Edmonds (Horsham, UK) was strong coming into the game in relief for Durham, pitching two scoreless innings and allowing only two hits.
Despite giving up nine earned runs, Humber's James Byrnes earned the win.
Spencer Green (Mallorytown, Ont.) had a big day at the plate as he went 4-for-5 with three runs and an RBI. This was Green's second four hit game of the year. Designated hitter
Ben deBoer (Kendal, Ont.) was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored while Brennan Conquer (Ajax, Ont.) was 2-for-4 with a run scored. The Lords left eight runners on base.
Durham sits in fourth place with a 3-5 record, chasing the Hawks who are 7-3. The Lords will be looking to cut into Humber's lead this weekend as they have a doubleheader in Toronto on Saturday.
