OSHAWA, Ont. – For the third straight year, there was a new team hoisting the Adidas Cup as the Sheridan Bruins won the 27th running of the tournament.
Sheridan beat the St. Clair Saints 2-0 in the championship match by sets scores of 25-22 and 25-23. This is the second straight year St. Clair has reached the finals, but has fallen in straight sets both times despite not scoring less than 22 points each time.
Following the championship match, Melissa Cappelletti of the Bruins was named the championship MVP while teammate Dimetra Stathakos was named an all-star. Helen Wiebe and Monica Roch of the Saints were also named tournament all-stars.
Durham was relegated to the fifth place match after losing out on a tiebreaker with the Bruins in the round robin. The Lords tied both finalists St. Clair and Sheridan 1-1 in pool play as they ended up with a 7-3 record. Durham defeated Canadore 2-0 by scores of 25-20 and 25-15 to end up in fifth place overall.
The defending champion Georgian Grizzlies had a comeback effort to defeat Cambrian 2-1 in the third place match. Set scores were 20-25, 25-18 and 15-8. Alex Roy of Georgian and Stacey Carter of Cambrian were tournament all-stars.
The Lords will resume conference action next week when they host the Trent Excalibur on Thursday, Jan. 8. First serve at the CRWC is 6 p.m. Trent is 7-2 during the regular season and in second place in the region, one game ahead of the Lords.
