OSHAWA, Ont. – Win and you're in. That is what the Durham College men's soccer team was facing on Tuesday night with the Centennial Colts in town.
The Lords had plenty of reason to be optimistic holding a 2-0 lead just 10 minutes into the game but three unanswered goals by the Colts including back-to-back goals just two minutes apart would end Durham's playoff hopes.
Durham finishes the year with a 2-5-3 record and in fifth place in the eastern conference, with all of their losses but one being by one goal. The Lords end the season on a three-game losing streak and were swept in the season series 2-0 against the Colts.
Tristen Wilson (Ajax, Ont.) and
Tevin Noel-Peterson (Whitby, Ont.) were the goal scorers for Durham, scoring in the first ten minutes of the game.
It looked as if Durham would enter halftime with the two-goal advantage, but Tyler Dill scored just as the clock hit 45:00 to cut the lead to one.
With Durham playing on their heels in the second half, Centennial's Andres Sachez-Guttierrez capitalized off a Durham turnover and blasted a bicycle kick in the back of the net.
Two minutes after the tying goal, Centennial found themselves back on the offensive zone and were awarded a free kick just outside the box. Syed Ali made no mistake as he scored to put the Colts in front 3-2.
Durham would press hard for the equalizer but Centennial goalkeeper Nico Koutroubis made eight saves for the win.
With the loss, Durham will now turn their attention to the indoor soccer season that begins in 2016.
