Lords eliminated from OCAA championship

ETOBICOKE, Ont. – The Durham College men's baseball team has had their season come to a close on Saturday after losing a pair of games at the OCAA men's baseball championship presented by belairdirect.

Their opening game saw the Lords against the top-ranked St. Clair Saints and three-time defending champions.

The game remained scoreless until the third inning when Durham's Tristan Willcocks (Whitby, Ont.) scored on a passed ball. Shortly after, the Saints scored three runs and entered the fifth inning with a score of 3-1 for the Saints.

The Lords finished the game strong but were unable to catch up with the Saints. St. Clair won the game 3-1. Player of the game was awarded to Logan Stewart (Lindsay, Ont.) of the Durham Lords and Austin Oulds of the St. Clair Saints.

In their second game of the day the Durham Lords were eliminated after suffering an 8-2 loss to the Fanshawe Falcons.

The tension in the park was high as the teams took the field with the chance of being sent home. At bat first, the Lords were up for the challenge, however; the Falcons kept the score tied at 0-0 for the first two innings.

Pitching for the Falcons, Tyler Rymel, threw perfectly, striking out Willcocks of the Lords to start off the third inning.

Scoreless into the bottom of the third, Lords pitcher, Alec Brown (Bowmanville, Ont.), was up against the fighting Falcons. Off of a wild pitch, Zev Weisdorf, scored the first run of the game putting Fanshawe up 1-0. Another two runs were scored sending the Falcons into the fourth inning with a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth the Falcons increased their lead, scoring three more runs for an 8-0 lead. The Lords managed to score two runs making the final score 8-2, sending the Falcons into tomorrow's semifinal against the Humber Hawks.

The player of the game awards went to Durham's Brodie Harkness (Bowmanville, Ont.) and Tyler Rymel of Fanshawe.

Durham's season hasn't yet though, as the Lords will now prepare for the inaugural Canadian College National Baseball Invitational from Oct. 27-29 at Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium in Oshawa.
