VAUGHAN, Ont. – The Durham College men's indoor soccer team just missed out on qualifying for the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) provincial championship finishing in third place in pool play at the regional championship on Tuesday at the Ontario Soccer Centre.
Needing a win or tie against Conestoga in their third match of the day to be in control of their own destiny, Durham found themselves in good position with the game scoreless and only five minutes to go in the second half. After a Durham scoring chance, Conestoga transitioned the ball down the field and were on a 3-on-2. With Durham's forwards unable to get back on defence, Condor striker Omar Mohamed beat goalkeeper Jonathan Codrington to score the game's lone goal.
Although Durham (2-1-1) defeated St. Lawrence Brockville 6-0 in their final game, Conestoga (3-1-0) and Centennial (3-0-1) both won out and finished ahead of them in standings.
Durham opened up the regional championship with a 2-1 comeback win over the Confederation Thunderhawks with Colin Reilly and Tristen Wilson finding the back of the net for the Lords.
In game two, Durham opened up a 1-0 lead over Centennial as Austin MacDonell finished off a nice passing play on a fast break. The lead was short-lived as Kevin Segamanasinghe blasted one past Codrington to level the score. With the game tied, Durham would fight off a pair of two-minute penalties to earn a draw.
Against Brockville in the final game, Durham's offence exploded for six goals, five of which were scored in the second half. Wilson netted a hat-trick while Sasa Vukoje scored a pair. Karter Donnelly rounded out scoring for Durham with his only goal of the tournament.
The Durham College women's indoor soccer team will be in action on Wednesday in regional play.
