NORTH YORK, Ont. - The Durham College men's indoor soccer team earned their spot at the OCAA championship after finishing second at their OCAA Regional competition, finishing the day at Seneca College with a 3-1 record.
The Lords opened competition with a decisive 6-0 victory over the Centennial Colts.
Marcellus Paul (Courtice, Ont.) scored a hat-trick in the big opening match win, while
Nick Spittle (Ajax, Ont.),
Nate Paine (Whitby, Ont.), and
Ryan Airlie (Whitby, Ont.) each scored single markers.
Dylan Toland (Ajax, Ont.) earned the clean sheet in net.
DC were then tested by the Lambton Lions in their second game of the day, but earned a 2-1 victory over the opponents from Sarnia.
LeRohne Young (Oshawa, Ont.) converted from the penalty spot to draw even with the Lions in the second half, before
Joshua Lee (Ajax, Ont.) scored to secure the victory for the green and gold.
Kevon Grant (Oshawa, Ont.) earned the win in net.
Durham next matched up with the Fanshawe Falcons, who would go on to finish first at the OCAA Regional event following a 3-0 win over the Lords. Crisp passing from the Falcons created scoring opportunities, while the Lords were unable to convert with their counter-attack offence.
Before kick-off of the final game, the Lords had already secured their place at the provincial championship, holding tiebreakers over both Centennial and Lambton. However, tiebreakers weren't needed as DC scored a 4-2 win over the Georgian Grizzlies to lock up second place. Spittle and Airlie added to their goal totals on the day by each scoring one goal apiece, while
Jeremy Bangala (Pickering, Ont.) and
Isiah Passley (Pickering, Ont.) also netted single markers in the win.
The OCAA Championship is scheduled to begin next week on Thursday, Mar. 12 at Redeemer University in Hamilton.
