Four recruits commit to Durham College soccer

OSHAWA, Ont. – Durham College women's soccer head coach Ramon McIntosh continues to build a well-rounded roster in preparation for the OCAA season.

Recently he welcomed four players to the Lords, which included goalkeeper Heather Travis, centre-back Kennedi Risi, and midfielders Nicole Colangelo and Emma Milan.

"We have brought in the best position players starting from the goal out," said McIntosh. "From Heather in goal, Kennedi in the backfield to Nikki and Emma in the midfield, we have added the pieces that will help lead us to continue our growth and success as a program."

Travis, who comes to Durham from Oakville, spent the 2014-15 season with the Erin Mills Soccer Club as the starting goalkeeper in all 16 league games. In Oshawa she experienced success that season in the Frank Sobil Spring Classic, allowing only one goal in four games, as Erin Mills won the tournament. With her high school squad at Holy Trinity, she only conceded one goal in 11 games to finish the season with an 8-1-2 record.

"I am excited to start this next chapter of my life at Durham College," said Travis. "I have always wanted to play college soccer and now I get to pursue my dreams just an hour away from my hometown."

Colangelo, from Whitby, played all four years with Father Leo J. Austin CSS, which included winning two LOSSA gold medals, a LOSSA silver and OFSSA bronze last year. She spent her club seasons with the Whitby Iroquois Soccer Club, where she was captain from 2009-16. In 2015 she was the second leading goal scorer in league play.

"I am a central midfielder that is aggressive with a loud voice and an accurate shot," said Colangelo when asked what she will bring to the field.

Milan, from Courtice, continues to play with the Whitby Iroquois in preparation for her first season with the Lords. In 2015 her club won the CGSL league championship before being promoted to the OYSL for the 2016 season. Prior to her time with Whitby she spent the 2012 and 2013 outdoor seasons with Oshawa Turul Soccer Club.

"I'm a pretty aggressive player and I'm not afraid to move the ball forward," said Milan. "I'm excited to play with the girls and hope we go pretty far this year."

Risi, who plays for Niagara Elite currently, comes to Durham from Thorold. In 2015 her club was Rochester tournament champions. She said her experiences at numerous tournaments in the U.S. and playing with older players at U-18 and U-19 showcases helped her improve her game prior to playing college soccer.

"Starting my research on the schools I knew I was interested in going away and came upon Durham College," she said. "I knew the biotechnology program that I'm taking was a very good program, so I came here, looked at it and loved it. I knew it was the right choice for me."

With the addition of top recruits, McIntosh hopes to get the program back to the playoffs this season for the first time since 2013. Training camp opens in August, with the OCAA schedule to get underway in early September.
