SYRACUSE, NY – It could not have been a better start to the season for the Durham College baseball team as they swept the Onondaga Lazers 2-0 in Syracuse, NY on Saturday.
This marks the second straight year that the Lords have played against Onondaga in preseason action, with the teams splitting their doubleheader in 2015.
Things looked bad for Durham in their opening game trailing the Lazers 5-1 after four innings of play. It took some time but the Lords' bats would eventually wake up as they scored three in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 6-5 lead.
Relieving starting pitcher
Brodie Harkness in the fifth inning,
Cole Casford shut down the Lazers the rest of the way as he allowed just one hit over three innings to earn the decision in the 6-5 win.
Brendon Dadson reached base three times and scored a run while Logan Stewart had one hit and two RBI.
Game two was a one-run game until the fourth inning when the Lords put up five runs on the scoreboard to take a commanding 6-0 lead. The Lords would tack on two more and allow just one to earn the 8-1 victory.
Although the offence registered eight runs, Durham's defence is what stood out as they had a complete turnaround, committing no errors compared to the two they had in game one.
Starting pitcher
Alec Brown allowed just four hits and one earned run over seven innings of work to pick up the complete game victory.
Veteran
Spencer Edwards went 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI. Freshman Braden Weir also had a multi-hit game as he went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The Lords will now head west across the I-90 for another doubleheader on Sunday when they take on the Genesee Cougars in Batavia.
Their OCAA regular season will begin on Friday night in North York as they play Seneca at 6/8 p.m. Durham's home opener will take place two days later when they host the George Brown Huskies at Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
