BATAVIA, NY – The Durham College baseball team will enter OCAA conference play with a lot of confidence after going 4-0 in weekend action against the Onondaga Lazers and Genesee Cougars in upstate New York.
Sunday's action saw the Lords sweep the Cougars, posting scores of 4-2 and 9-3.
Making his return to Durham,
Shaun Slemko pitched his first game with the green and gold since the 2012 season. The veteran pitcher showed no signs of rust going the distance against his other former team, holding the Cougars to a pair of earned runs on eight hits.
Just like game one on Saturday, the Lords needed a comeback effort for the win as they trailed Genesee 2-0 heading into the sixth inning. Durham's offence managed to put up four runs in the top half of the inning, highlighted by Tristan Willcock's two-run hit.
Dylan Harkness also had a clutch RBI while Kadeev
Bembridge was 2-for-2 at the plate.
In game two, it was another big inning that propelled Durham to victory as the Lords scored six runs in the fourth.
Jack Rankin went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Jared Fenlong was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.
Logan Stewart got the start and pitched five innings, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out eight. Travis Doyle closed the game out with two scoreless innings.
Durham will begin OCAA conference play on Friday, Sept. 9 against Seneca College at Stewart Burnett Park.
The Lords home opener is set for Sunday, Sept. 11 against the George Brown Huskies. First pitch at Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium is 1 p.m.
