Lords eliminated from OCAA baseball championship

Box Score TECUMSEH, Ont. – The Durham College men's baseball team is returning home from the OCAA baseball championship empty handed after another tough outing at the tournament.

Since hosting at home in 2014, the Lords haven't medaled at the championship. Prior to that they won back-to-back silver medals.

Their early departure came thanks to the Humber Hawks and Fanshawe Falcons, who defeated the Lords 6-1 and 8-1.

To open the day, the Hawks jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning and added a single run in the third inning to take control early. Durham scored in the fifth to keep within striking distance, but Humber answered quickly in their bottom half with three runs to put the game away.

Steven Hough went the distance on the mound for Humber earning the complete game win. Hough was named Humber's player of the game and allowed just one run on five hits, while striking out six Durham batters. Designated hitter Dennis Dei Baning had a pair of hits including a two-run RBI double, which was the big strike for Humber in the game's opening inning.

Third basemen Ryan Bothwell (Napanee, Ont.) had a single and earned player of the game recognition for Durham.

Pitcher of the year award winner Brodie Harkness (Bowmanville, Ont.) allowed six runs, one earned, on nine hits. He struck out five Hawks.

To end the day Logan Stewart (Lindsay, Ont.) took the loss against the Falcons, who Durham swept 4-0 in their season series. In five innings, he allowed eight runs, three earned, on seven hits and six walks.

Jake Storry (Port Perry, Ont.) had another solid outing, throwing a perfect two innings.

At the plate Tristan Willcocks (Whitby, Ont.) was the biggest threat for Durham, going 3-for-3 with a double, home run and an RBI. That wasn't enough though as Fanshawe scored three in the bottom of the second, two in the fifth and three in the sixth to outscore the Lords who only had two runs cross the plate at the championship.

Next week the Lords will be back in action as they host the second annual Canadian Colleges National Baseball Championship in Oshawa at Kinsmen Stadium.
