OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College women's soccer team qualified for the OCAA championship for the first time since 2009 with a 4-0 win over the Sheridan Bruins in the crossover round of the playoffs.
Despite Durham's clear offensive superiority this season, Sheridan kept it close for most of the first half as the game was back and forth, highlighted by a number of key saves by
Jayden Ball (Oshawa, Ont.).
However,
Cory Lapointe (Whitby, Ont.) opened the scoring 39 minutes in as she capitalized on a miscue by the Sheridan goalkeeper to put the Lords in front 1-0.
Milinda Roblero (Pickering, Ont.), who entered the game on a five-game scoring streak, doubled the Lords' lead with a goal right before the whistle blew for halftime, as she lobbed in a right-footed shot over the goalkeeper's stretched arms.
After Amber Reesor replaced the hurt starting goalkeeper Savanna Wood for the Bruins near the end of the first half, Reesor kept the Bruins in the game standing tall with five second half saves.
The Lords refused to sit back and
Lauren Coyle (Quispamsis, N.B.) and
Natassha Hassenstein (Oshawa, Ont.) scored a pair of goals two minutes apart in the 75th and 77th minutes respectively. Coyle's goal was one for the highlight reel as she turned and fired a shot from 25 yards out that found the back-right corner.
In Durham's 4-0 victory, the home side attempted 25 shots with 12 reaching target and a third of those finding the back of the net. Ball made 10 saves in her fourth clean sheet of the season.
Durham now heads north to Sudbury to take part in the 2017 Belairdirect OCAA Women's Soccer Championship at Cambrian College. Their opening round match of the championship will be determined at the conclusion of the crossover round.
