Memorable experience for Durham at Cooperstown

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. – Playing on a diamond that is in a town recognized to be the birthplace of baseball - not a bad way to start the year for the Durham College baseball team.

As most know, the heart and soul of Cooperstown can be described in one word: baseball. Doubleday Field is in the centre of a small village that is recognized as the birthplace of the game.

After touring the baseball Hall of Fame, the Lords took to the field for the first of three games against the Onondaga Lazers of the NJCAA. Although they did not pick up a win, playing on the historic field was a great experience for the entire team and coaching staff.

Onondaga would beat the Lords 9-3, breaking up a 3-3 tie in the seventh with a four-run inning.

Brodie Harkness got the start for Durham and allowed three earned runs over five innings of work in a no-decision. Eric Beharri was the pitcher of record as he suffered the loss giving up four runs in two innings.

On offence, Durham had five players who recorded one hit that include Brendon Watt driving in two runs and scoring another.

The following day in Onondaga, the Lords and Lazers would split doubleheader action. Onondaga opened up the day with a 10-3 win followed up with the Lords pulling out a 9-6 come from behind victory in game two.

In game one, Durham's starter Alec Brown got off to a rough start allowing four runs in the opening inning. The veteran pitcher would settle down and allow just one more run over the next four innings to keep Durham within striking distance. Durham would put three runs on the board but allowed five more in the bottom of the sixth.

Dryden Norton and Brian Wowk had two hits apiece while combining for two runs and two RBI.

In game two, the Lords found themselves down 6-0 after three innings but were able to mount a comeback scoring four runs in the fifth and sixth innings and adding one more in the seventh to take it by a score of 9-6.

Norton and Spencer Edwards each had a hit and two RBI while Logan Stewart recorded a hit in his only plate appearance.

Wowk picked up the win pitching five innings in relief, allowing just one earned run and two hits.

The Lords had two games scheduled for Sunday against Genesee but were rained out.

Durham will open up OCAA conference play on Saturday, Sept. 9 against the Humber Hawks. Game time at Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium is 1 p.m.
