OAKVILLE, Ont. – Coming off their first preseason win in their first home action on Saturday, the Durham College women's soccer team fell 2-1 to the Sheridan Bruins on Sunday afternoon.
Cory Lapointe (Whitby, Ont.), off a great combination by Mackenzie Barry (Ajax, Ont.) and
Vanessa Juras (Ajax, Ont.), scored in only the third minute of play to put the Lords ahead 1-0.
Not to be outdone, the Bruins knotted things up less than 10 minutes later, a score that held into the half.
Sheridan took the lead early in the second half and held on for the one-goal victory.
"We started off well and created enough scoring opportunities, but didn't take advantage of those chances," said head coach
Alex Bianchi. "On the other end of the field, overall we were solid enough, but had two mental lapses that allowed Sheridan attackers to walk in on our keeper and they took advantage and capitalized on those. You just can't make those kinds of mistakes at this level because good team will take advantage. Sheridan did and they are deserved the win."
Bianchi said he felt the Lords were sluggish in the middle of the game, likely due to back-to-back games, but that's something they need to overcome.
"Our first four league games are back-to-back, so we will have to deal with these circumstances again," he said. "I'm happy with the way we pushed hard at the end. Our team showed a lot of character."
Their next action is the Campus Cup, a 50-minute friendly with the UOIT Ridgebacks, followed by their first OCAA game of the season on Friday, Sept. 7 in Belleville against the Loyalist Lancers.
