WELLAND, Ont. - Facing two of the perennial top teams in the OCAA on Day 1 of the Niagara Invitational, the Durham College women's volleyball team earned two impressive wins on Saturday.
The Lords opened their tournament play with a three set sweep of the fifteen time provincial champion Humber Hawks, before avenging a 2018-19 OCAA semifinal loss versus the Niagara Knights following a four-set win over the host.
Set scores for Game 1 were 25-19, 27-25, 28-26, and for Game 2 were 25-22, 25-15, 19-25, 25-22.
Second-year setter
Georgi Williams (Whitby, Ont.) continued to showcase herself as a key member of the Lords explosive offence, guiding the team's attack by facilitating options all over the court in both contests. First-year libero
Tiana Cowper (Calgary, Alta.) was strong defensively for the Lords in their second match of the day versus the Knights, especially in dealing with Niagara's service game. Meanwhile, fellow incoming recruit
Haley Bickell (Winnipeg, Ont.) delivered an all-around effort.
"I'm really impressed by the group of girls we have," said DC head coach
Tony Clarke. "They are so supportive of each other, and because of that I think the new recruits we've added have been able to jump right in and make an impact. The positivity all the players are bringing right now is contagious and that has us excited not just for tomorrow's game, but the entire season with them."
The Lords continue action at the Niagara Invitational bright-and-early tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. against the Georgian Grizzlies.
Overall Record: 9-5
Conference Record: 0-0
Next match: Sunday, Oct. 6 vs. Georgian Grizzlies (9 a.m. – Welland, Ont.)
