OSHAWA, Ont. – In their first match since winning OCAA bronze last October, the Durham College women's soccer team was shutout 2-0 by the Sheridan Bruins on Wednesday night.
Playing three 30-minute thirds for the preseason match, the Lords held Sheridan off the scoresheet until the second third of play.
Cathy Carvelho broke the stalemate in the 37
th minute, which was the only goal until the 79
th minute when Jessica D'Aguilar iced the game with the Bruins second goal of the night.
Brianna Tarullo and Savanna Wood combined for the Sheridan clean sheet, while
Kerrington Steed played all 90 minutes of the match for Durham College.
"We're (coaching staff) never very concerned with any outcome in an early preseason game," said head coach
Alex Bianchi. "It's a time for players to adjust to the collegiate game and understand the formation and each other. It's a time for coaches to figure out what they have in their team so that we can start to make corrections or adjustments as required. No one wins a championship in August. Playing Sheridan in preseason has become a staple for us as they are a good team that allows us to access what we have and what we need to work on."
This weekend, the Lords continue preseason play as they travel down the I-90 into Ohio and right into Buckeye territory. After a great 2018-19 season in which the Lords finished 11-3-1, and an equally great offseason featuring the acquisition of several big-time recruits, the Lords are ready and eager for the season to kick off. First up for Durham is the Ursuline Arrows of Pepper Pike, Ohio on Saturday, Aug. 24.
After a short drive, DC will be taking on the Edinboro Fighting Scots of Edinboro, Pennsylvania on Sunday, Aug. 25 to cap off their American run.
Their next home action is Thursday, Aug. 29 against the UTM Eagles.
