OSHAWA, ON - Hosting their annual Adidas Cup tournament, the Durham College women's volleyball team picked up two victories on the opening day of competition, defeating both George Brown and Conestoga in three set sweeps at the CRWC on Friday.
Playing in their 13th and 14th preseason games of a very busy exhibition schedule, the Lords made quick work of George Brown in the opening match of the tournament winning with set scores of 25-11, 25-16, 25-13. Fourth-year outside hitter
Katie Stewart (Gananoque, ON) was a force at the net for DC in the win, finishing the match with 14 total points from six kills, seven blocks, and one service ace. Also stifling the Huskies attack with block after block were first-year middles
Amanda Larsen (Toronto, ON) and
Mia Hildebrandt (Winnipeg, MB) who recorded six and four blocks, respectively. Rookie setter
Jill Batsford (Kingston, ON) led the offense with 12 assists over two sets played, while defensively the Lords saw first-year libero
Alisia Lush (Lyalta, AB) notch a game-high seven digs.
In the second match of the day Durham continued with the hot hand, defeating the Condors by set scores of 25-10, 25-20, 25-13.
Brooke Young (Chestermere, AB) paced the Lords offense as the primary setter, registering 20 assists over two sets. Young was able to spread the ball around to a number of teammates as Stewart recorded a game-high nine kills, followed by Hildebrandt and
Cassidy Unrau (Port Coquitlam, BC) with seven apiece, and
Aislinn Pedersen (Hamilton, ON) with five. Unrau was exceptional in the quick three set match finishing with a team-high 14 points as she added four blocks and three service aces to her stat line. Defensively, Lush shined once again registering 15 digs, while
Beth Munshaw (Oshawa, ON) also excelled with nine digs.
The Adidas Cup continues tomorrow at the CRWC with the Lords beginning the day against the La Cite Coyotes ar 10 a.m. Following the conclusion of the round robin matches in the morning, placement games will then take place at 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
