Box Score 2 SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – The Durham Lords begun a winning streak this weekend, making the trip north to Sault Ste. Marie and sweeping the Sault Cougars in a Sunday afternoon doubleheader.
Sault opened the scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning and held the visiting Lords scoreless in the first two innings.
Durham would respond with eight runs in the third inning to create what would become an insurmountable lead.
Mason Wright (Courtice, ON),
Ethan Drews (Clarington, ON),
Blake Jolicoeur (Whitby, ON),
Tyler Chong (Markham, ON),
Nick King (Whitby, ON),
Cruz Lopez (Brooklin, ON),
Ryan Mattes (Whitby, ON), and
Eddie Borutskie (Oshawa, ON) would all find their way to home plate in the inning.
Jolicoeur would hit a home run in the following inning, scoring his second run of the game.
The scoreboard operator was busy in the fifth inning, Borutskie hit the second home run in the game with Mattes on base to take a 11-1 lead.
Wendel Johnson (Whitby, ON) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Drews advanced to home. King then made his way to the plate and the starting pitcher hit a grand slam.
It would not be long before the bases were loaded again and Jolicoeur hit the second grand slam of the inning, marking his second home run of the game. Durham added four more runs after that and the game was eventually called, ending 25-1 in Durham's favour.
Jolicoeur finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate, scoring three runs and generating five RBI's. Chong finished. 4-for-5, while Lopez, Borutskie, Mattes and Wright also had multi-hit games.
King pitched 4.0 innings on the mound, striking out nine batters and only conceding a single run.
Cam Lugtenburg (Bowmanville, ON) pitched the fifth inning, striking out two batters and walking two.
Following a scoreless first inning to open the second half of the doubleheader, Lugtenburg hit a two-run home run to get the Lords on the scoreboard first. Jolicoeur would hit a bomb later in the hitting for another home run with a player on base, putting the Lords up by four. The Cougars replied back in the bottom half of the frame with a run of their own.
In the third inning, a double hit by Johnson sent Smith and King home for the score and a 6-1 lead. Sault scored one more in the bottom of the third, but the Lords earned that five-run lead back as Chong scored on an error in the fourth inning.
Jolicoeur took his spot in the batter's box in the top of the fifth and would eventually reach first on an error via the throw by the shortstop, which ultimately advanced Smith across home plate for an 8-2 lead.
In the sixth inning,
Brett Diamond (Newcastle, ON) scored his first of the afternoon before Lugtenburg hit a triple with Smith on base to push the Lords into double-digit run territory for the second time on the afternoon.
Jolicoeur scored his second run of the game to start off the seventh, and Chong would score his second later in the inning for a 12-2 lead and final score.
Four pitchers were on the mound for the Lords across seven innings.
Jackson Painter (Whitby, ON) pitched 3.0 innings, striking out four batters.
Ryan Mattes pitched a pair of innings, striking out two batters and giving up no runs.
Thomas Aronowicz (Whitby, ON) and
Ben Spunde (Elmira, ON) each pitched one inning.
The Lords are back on the road on Thursday, October 6 where they head to Toronto for a doubleheader against the Humber Hawks.
