OSHAWA, ON - The Durham College women's soccer team are through to the semi-finals after defeating the Mohawk Mountaineers 1-0 at the 2022 OCAA Women's Soccer Championship.
Playing on home turf, the Lords were flying to kickoff the match - one that would be proved to be evenly matched as both sides had their share of opportunities to keep their season alive over the course of 90 minutes.
After 45 minutes, the match was scoreless going into halftime. The two schools had only conceded a combined 13 goals all season, so fans knew they were in for a strong defensively minded performance.
Sage Thomas-Roberts (Toronto, ON) opened the scoring in the 50th minute on a shot that saw the ball curl beneath the crossbar right in the top corner.
Durham controlled much of the possession for a good amount of the second half and around the 80th minute mark they switched to a defence-first mentality to force a clean sheet in the one-goal match.
Thomas-Roberts had seven shots in the match with four on target. Erika Bjorgum (Kingman, AB) recorded a trio of shots with two on target, Kyra Barton (Whitby, ON) had a pair of shots and Jessica Ferreira (Ajax, ON) registered one.
The Mountaineers hit target twice on six shots and Nikki Bradshaw (Newtonville, ON) turned away both for the clean sheet.
Barton earned player of the match honours for the Lords.
With the win, the Lords advance to the semi-finals at Vaso's Field on Saturday at 3:00 PM against the winner of the Seneca Sting and Centennial Colts quarter-final.
