Box Score 2 OSHAWA, ON – The Durham Lords walked off the Seneca Sting twice on Sunday afternoon to sweep the doubleheader at Kinsmen Stadium.
Both sides came out of the gates swinging in the first game, scoring two runs each through the first inning. A big five-run second inning from the Sting gave the visitors a 7-3 lead through two and would lead by as many as five runs in the seventh and final inning.
Facing down a 10-5 deficit, Blake Jolicoeur (Whitby, ON) and
Erik Smith (Whitby, ON) scored on a two-RBI single from pinch hitter
Ethan Drews (Clarington, ON). Drews later rounded the bases to score himself and cut the deficit to two.
With the bases loaded and trailing by two runs,
Ryan Mattes (Whitby, ON) smacked a walk-off triple that sent
Eddie Borutskie (Oshawa, ON),
Brett Diamond (Newcastle, ON) and
Nick King (Whitby, ON) across home plate to win the game.
With a walk-off win, the Lords improved to 2-1 on opening weekend, heading into their fourth game in two days.
In the second half of the doubleheader, the Lords got off to a strong start scoring one run in the second inning, followed by two runs in the third, fourth and fifth to give the hosts a 7-1 lead heading into the final two innings.
Seneca battled back with a five-run second inning, followed by three runs in the top half of the final inning to give themselves a 9-8 lead. Borutskie tied the game with a run in the bottom of the seventh off a double hit by
Mason Wright (Courtice, ON).
With bases loaded and
Tyler Chong (Markham, ON) up to the plate following an intentional walk, Chong reached first base on a fielder's choice and
Corey Stewart (St. Catharines, ON) touched home plate to win it 10-9 for the Lords on a walk-off fielder's choice.
Jackson Painter (Whitby, ON) pitched 5.0 innings, striking out seven and only giving up one earned run.
Jacob Mahoney (Toronto, ON) followed up with two strikeouts of his own from the mound.
Mahoney finished 3-for-4 at the plate with one run and two RBI's. Borutskie was a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBI's.
Durham will play their first road series of the season at George Brown in Toronto this Wednesday, with first pitches set for 5:00 and 8:00 PM.
