Box Score 2 TORONTO, ON – The Durham Lords and George Brown Huskies split Wednesday's doubleheader in Toronto, highlighted by an OCAA record most total runs in a game combined by two teams.
The record previously sat at a combined 35 runs, set by Seneca and Durham at Kinsmen Stadium on September 14, 2019 when the Sting won 18-17, and later matched by Humber and Centennial on September 25, 2021 when the Hawks defeated the Colts 31-4.
The bats were hot from the beginning as
Ryan Mattes (Whitby, ON) hit a triple with the bases loaded to put the Lords up 3-0. In the second inning,
Ishaan Persaud (Pickering, ON) scored on a single hit by
Tyler Chong (Markham, ON), who would later score on an error. Durham would sit on a 9-5 lead through three innings.
Nick King (Whitby, ON) smashed a home run at the top of the fourth inning with
Cam Lugtenburg (Bowmanville, ON) and
Jacob Mahoney (Toronto, ON) already on base to extend the lead to 12-5. Not long later, Blake Jolicoeur (Whitby, ON) led off the fifth inning with a solo home run of his own.
With an 18-12 lead heading into the sixth inning, the Huskies posted a big five-run bottom half of the inning to bring the score within one.
Eddie Borutskie (Oshawa, ON) scored on an error that sent everyone ahead a base to take a 19-17 lead. The Huskies would only score one run in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Lords a 19-18 win.
This result would mean the Lords had scored a double-digit number of runs in four of the first five games to start the season.
Mahoney saw the most plate appearances with six, recording three hits, three runs and an RBI. Borutskie finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI's. Overall, every member of the Durham Lords that went up to bat recorded at least one hit and one run.
Four pitchers hit the mound for the Lords in the first game, with
Michael Asselin (Pickering, ON) striking out three batters in 3.0 innings pitched.
Chong opened the scoring in the second game early, giving the Lords a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Runs scored by Jolicoeur and Chong in the second inning triggered a back and forth affair as the Huskies led 4-3 through three innings.
Balls went flying in the top of the fourth as the Lords added five runs to the score sheet with Jolicoeur, Mahoney, Lugtenburg, King and Mattes all scoring.
Down 8-4, George Brown hit a two-man home run to kick off a comeback that would eventually see the Huskies take the lead again in a five-run inning. The game was delayed at the top of the seventh and the final inning will be played at a later date to determine a winner.
The Lords will stay on the road for a Saturday afternoon visit to Fanshawe College in London.
