SCARBOROUGH, ON - Splitting a doubleheader on the road against the Centennial Colts, the Lords responded to a tight loss with a big win that saw Cole Cote (Welland, ON) etch his name into the OCAA record books.
The first half of the Saturday afternoon doubleheader was a low scoring affair, with the Colts opening the scoring in the bottom of the fourth en route to a 3-2 win over a hot Durham Lords side.
Durham managed six hits in the game, with two coming off the bat of Cote who went 2-for-3 at the plate, as well as two from Nolan Hartley (Oshawa, ON) who also went 2-for-3.
Cote and Zach Rivers (Oshawa, ON) were the ones to score runs for the visitors in the game.
Johnny Halls (Newmarket, ON) pitched six innings, striking out seven batters and conceding only one run. Nick King came in during the bottom of the seventh, striking out two of five batters faced.
The second game looked more like the Lords we have grown accustomed to seeing this fall, scoring a run in the top of the first before adding eight more in the third inning. Scoring a pair of runs in the fourth, the Lords found themselves ahead 11-0 halfway through the game.
Centennial proved they do not go down without a fight, scoring eight runs to come back to life but the Lords were too much, defeating the hosts 15-8.
In this game, Cote broke the OCAA all-time records for most hits in a single season by an individual and most RBI's in a single season by an individual, bringing his totals to 31 hits and 32 RBI's with four games left to go this season. Cote went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and three batted in.
Erik Smith (Whitby, ON) was also hot at the plate, getting on base three times in five appearances at bat and scoring two runs. Mason Wright (Courtice, ON) took advantage of runners on base, hitting for four RBI's.
Charles Roy (Toronto, ON) pitched 5.0 innings, striking out six. Robbie Whalley (Whitby, ON) and Jacob Mahoney (Toronto, ON) also touched the mound, with Mahoney striking out two of six batters.
The Lords will host a doubleheader on Friday, October 6 against the George Brown Huskies with first pitch scheduled for 4:30 PM.
