NORTH YORK, ON – Jessica Joensen (Brooklin, ON) has become the Durham College women's volleyball all-time leader in points with 788, surpassing Amanda Doris who recorded 771 points between 2005-2010.
With 20.0 points against the Seneca Sting on Wednesday evening, Joensen etches out her place in school history.
"As a coaching staff we are very happy for Jessica and all her accomplishments earned while being at DC. Since day one, she has had the mindset of an elite athlete. She works hard on and off the court, while striving to be her best self and teammate," said Durham Lords women's volleyball head coach
Tony Clarke. "Jess has been the voice and backbone of this program's success. Jess isn't about individual successes, however this is amazing for her to enter the record books among a talented group of young ladies that wore the green and gold."
Joensen first arrived at Durham College from Dunbarton High School in Pickering during the 2016-17 OCAA season. She was a major contributor on the floor immediately, scoring 98.0 points across 18 matches. Jessica was fourth on the team in points in her rookie year only behind Shannon Dean, Allison Marshall and Lucia Kalmeyer.
She surpassed 100 points in a season for the first time in 2017-18, placing second on the team in points with 158.0. In 18 matches, Joensen registered 130 kills, 126 digs, 22 service aces and six blocked shots. Joensen again sat second in 2018-19 in points with a career-high 190.0 before posting 151.0 more in 2019-20.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the OCAA cancelled the 2020-21 season and operated a shortened eight-match 2021-22 campaign. Joensen saved that final year of eligibility for a full season, sitting out the short season. She still contributed to the team in many ways with her off the court leadership, serving as the team manager.
Joensen returned to the court for the 2022-23 season and leads the team with 191.0 points. At this pace, she is projected to finish the regular season with over 200 points for the first time in her career.
To date, Jessica is fifth in the OCAA in kills and fourth in kills per set, while ranking seventh in points and sixth in points per set.
"It has been a pleasure to watch Jessica grow as a student-athlete on and off the court and we are proud that she has called Durham College home for the past five seasons," said Ken Babcock, Director of Athletics & Recreation. "Jessica has forever secured a place in DC history and has entered territory where she stands alone."
This coming Saturday, the Lords play their final home match of the regular season at 1:00 PM against the Centennial Colts. As per tradition, the day will feature a special ceremony honouring the graduating seniors.
