Lords lose first regular season match since February 10, 2018

NORTH YORK, ON – The Durham Lords women's volleyball team see their undefeated streak come to an end at Seneca College with a 3-1 loss to the Sting.

Seneca took an early lead after winning the first set 25-21, handing the Lords their first lost set since November 12, 2022. The Sting then took the second set by a greater margin and a 25-18 score, being the first team to win two sets against the Lords in regular season play this season.

The Lords refused to go down without a fight, winning the third set by a tightly contested 25-23 score to force a fourth set.

In the fourth set, both sides were tied at 24 down the stretch. Needing to win by two to put a wrap on the night, the Sting scored the next two points to win 26-24 and take the match 3-1.

Jessica Joensen (Brooklin, ON) registered 18 kills on 49 total attempts and recorded 12 digs and two service aces for a season-high total of 20.0 points. With this performance, Joensen surpassed Amanda Doris as the Durham College women's volleyball program's all-time leader in career points.

Katie Stewart (Gananoque, ON) also generated double-digit kills with 13 on 32 attempts, along with 14 digs, a service ace and an assist. Brooke Young (Chestermere, AB) racked up 37 of 38 assists for the Lords over the course of the evening. At the net, Amanda Larsen (Toronto, ON) blocked three shots while athlete of the week Mia Hildebrandt (Winnipeg, MB) blocked one.

Going into the night, the Lords sat 14-0 on the season in OCAA regular season action. In fact, the Lords were on a 59 match winning streak in regular season play that began in February, 2018. Their last loss came on February 10, 2018 in Belleville against the Loyalist Lancers by a 3-1 score. Against the Sting, the Lords had been on a 12 match win streak dating back to 2015.

The Lords return to the court on Saturday as they host the Centennial Colts in Oshawa. As is tradition in the final home game of the regular season, the department of athletics will honour the graduating seniors in a special pre-game ceremony.
