Men's soccer add goalkeeper ahead of the 2023 season

OSHAWA, ON – The Durham College men's soccer team have made an addition in net as Luigi German Ribon (Whitby, ON) commits to play for the Lords in the fall.

German Ribon is a 6'3" goalkeeper who has the size and athleticism to be a real problem for opposing strikers. He recently participated at the FTF Showcase, keeping the most clean sheets in the tournament and not conceding a single goal over the weekend.

Luigi plays for the reserve team at Darby FC in League1 Ontario, where he plays club soccer in Whitby. Despite being the youngest player on the U21 squad, he has already been rewarded for his play and received a call-up to the men's team. German Ribon is the team captain for his reserve side where he has played since 2021, showing his leadership qualities on and off of the pitch.

Prior to making the jump to League1, German Ribon competed in and captained Whitby FC in the Ontario Player Development League. He was also the captain for Pickering's United FA in the same league, where he was also selected for Team Ontario try-outs. Going back further in his development, German Ribon is a product of the Oshawa Kicks Soccer Club, where he played for seven years before moving to top level competition in his age group.

"Facing penalty kicks and the pressure of tight games really gets my adrenaline pumping," said German Ribon. "As a player you need to remain calm but also use that adrenaline to your advantage. It's an incredible thrill."

German Ribon was born in Colombia and is also a fluent Spanish speaker. He had the opportunity to play in his home country for a month in the La Copa Unidos. Luigi is a strong student in the classroom, earning honour roll status at All Saints Catholic Secondary School.

Set to graduate from high school this June, Luigi has accepted his offer to the Police Foundations program at Durham College and will begin his post-secondary studies in September.
