King strikes out 16 as Lords take doubleheader

AJAX, ON - The Durham College men's baseball team met the Seneca Sting at the Ajax Sportsplex where the Lords scored 22 runs over two games to pick up a pair of wins.

Durham were relentless from the very first inning, putting their star on the game. Zach Rivers (Oshawa, ON) and Ryan Mattes (Whitby, ON) set the tone at the plate with Rivers going 4-for-5 and scoring three runs while Mattes scored two runs and registered two RBI's.

Cole Cote (Welland, ON) also had an impressive game, going 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Jacob Mahoney (Toronto, ON) joined the scoring party with a run, going 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI's.

Nick King (Whitby, ON) pitched the entirety of 7.0 innings, giving up only one hit in the game as Seneca hit a single in the bottom of the fourth. Coming into the game with 14 strikeouts on the year, King struck out 16 out of 21 batters faced on 81 total pitches.

His performance on the mound helped lift the Lords to a 9-0 win.

That raises his season total to 30, making King the league leader among OCAA pitchers in strikeouts - with 10 more than the next highest player.

Durham picked up where they left off, scoring three runs in the top half of the first inning, including a home run hit by Cote.

Down 4-0, Seneca found their way on the board in the bottom of the second and cut their deficit down to one.

After two scoreless innings, the Lords scored eight runs across the fifth and sixth innings to take a massive lead and didn't look back en route to a 13-7 win.

Mattes and Aaron Sprague (Oshawa, ON) were 3-for-4 at the plate in the game, with Mattes scoring a trio of runs and drawing in two RBI's. Mahoney had four RBI's in the game.

In addition to Mattes - Cote, Mahoney and Tristan Deslauriers (Oshawa, ON) finished the game with multi-run performances.

The Lords are back on the road on Saturday with a trip to Scarborough for a doubleheader at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM against the Centennial Colts.
