OSHAWA, Ont. - Durham College hosted another successful women's volleyball Adidas Cup competition over the weekend, with eight teams from a number of different conferences competing at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Centre to begin the new year.
The teams were split into two groups of four, which were as follows:
Pool A - Durham Lords (OCAA), Conestoga Condors (OCAA), l'Outaouais Griffons (RSEQ), Providence Pilots (MCAC).
Pool B - Seneca Sting (OCAA), St. Clair Saints (OCAA), André-Laurendeau Boomerang (RSEQ), Trent (OUA).
Each team played two matches on a day one, as the Lords swept the Condors to begin the competition and ended the day with a five-set win over the Griffons.
Heading into day two, the Lords were guaranteed a path to the championship as they had already secured a top two spot in their group.
On Saturday morning, the Lords beat the Pilots in four sets to finish with a 3-0 record, and the first place spot in the group.
In the semifinal stage, St. Clair swept Durham in three sets and Seneca defeated Providence in four to set-up a rematch between the Sting and Saints in the final.
Durham took the first two sets in the third place match against Providence, however the Pilots came back to win the next three to take third place, with the Lords finishing fourth.
In a thrilling final, the Saints had their sights set on revenge after being swept by the Sting in group stage play.
The two teams went back and forth in the final with Seneca taking the first and third sets, and St. Clair taking the second and fourth. Ultimately, Seneca would win the fifth set 15-11 to win the Adidas Cup.
Seneca's Emily McDonald earned tournament MVP honours while Taylor Grant and Emily Coughlan were named all-stars from the Sting.
The remainder of the all-star awards were earned by Arianna Karl (St. Clair), Haleigh Kearns (St. Clair), Tyra Peters (Providence) and Jessie Buck (Durham).
Durham's regular season resumes at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Centre against the Sting on Saturday, January 11 at 1:00 PM.
