Women’s soccer wraps up season at provincial championship

ANCASTER, Ont. – The Durham College women's soccer team is looking forward as their 2017-18 season came to a close on Friday.

After making it back to the OCAA championship for the first time since 2009 in their fall season, the Lords were eliminated from the OCAA indoor soccer championship at the conclusion of pool play on Friday.

A pair of 2-0 losses for Durham on Thursday meant a pair of victories were necessary to advance to Saturday's medal round, but the Seneca Sting (3-0-1) handed them another 2-0 loss before the St. Clair Saints (1-1-2) defeated them 7-1 in their final match.

The 7-1 score didn't give a clear indication of how the day went as the Lords were down 2-1 with just under 10 minutes to go and down four starters from Thursday.

Head coach Alex Bianchi is happy with the results of the weekend, even if it was four losses. He looks at the 2017-18 season as a whole and knows his team is built for the full game outdoors, but enjoys using indoor as a way to train in the winter.

"While the scores at the indoor championship did not favor us, the effort was good," he said. "Indoor is a totally different game and this team is built for the outdoor game. In review of the entire season, we saw the team get to the outdoor and indoor provincial championships and we believe the foundation and culture is now established. We still have a lot of work to do, but we're excited about the 2018 fall season."

Training camp and tryouts for the women's soccer team will be held in mid-August before the 2018 OCAA season gets underway just after Labour Day weekend.

"We are extremely happy about our incoming freshmen this fall, many who will have an immediate impact on the team," said Bianchi. "That, with our returning players and the commitment that everyone has shown to the program, we will challenge ourselves to succeed on the field, in the classroom and in the community."
