Durham earns split at OCAA Regionals

NORTH YORK, Ont. - The Durham College women's indoor soccer team went 2-2 at the annual OCAA regional competition, hosted by Seneca College in North York on Wednesday.

The Lords opened the day with an early morning match versus the Mohawk Mountaineers. Both teams found themselves in a stalemate for much of the match, with neither earning the upper hand until the Mountaineers broke the deadlock to take a 1-0 lead. DC will battle to find an equalizer but miscommunication with a substitution change would result in an insurance marker for Mohawk, securing the opponents the victory.

Durham then faced off with the host Seneca Sting in their second match of the day. The Sting were red hot from the start, keeping consistent pressure on the Lords. Home turf proved to be a difference as Seneca would walk away with a decisive 5-0 victory over the green and gold.

DC was able to bounce back in their third contest of the day, facing off with the Confederation Thunderhawks who made the trip to the regional competition all the way from Thunder Bay. The Lords dominated possession in the match, securing a 7-0 victory over the northern opponents. Cory Lapointe (Whitby, Ont.) notched two goals, while Jenna King (Ajax, Ont.), Kaelin Wright (Ajax, Ont.), Erin Dicaire (Oshawa, Ont.), Vanessa Juras (Ajax, Ont.), and Jessica Ferreira (Ajax, Ont.) each had a single marker.

The Lords closed out the day facing the Lakehead-Orillia Thunderwolves. Durham was able to secure another seven goal effort, winning the final match of competition with a 7-1 win. Juras added another two goals to her day, while Natassha Hassenstein (Oshawa, Ont.) also scored two goals in the win. Lapointe, Dicaire, and MacKenzie Barry each scored one goal apiece.

Kerrington Steed (Courtice, Ont.), Morgan Blaind (Cobourg, Ont.), and King all appeared in net for the Lords over the four matches.

With the Lords finishing outside the top two in their region they will not advance to the OCAA championship, bringing a close to the year for women's soccer.
