ANCASTER, Ont. – The Durham College women's soccer team continues to make strides trying to become one of the top collegiate programs in Canada once again.
The team made another step forward on Tuesday as they earned a berth in the OCAA women's indoor soccer championship for the first time since 2013. The OCAA championship is being hosted by Redeemer University from March 22-24.
The Lords advanced to the provincial championship after posting a 1-1-1 record at the regional finals.
Durham opened up the tournament with scoreless draw against the hosting Redeemer Royals, followed by a 2-1 loss to the St. Clair Saints. With a berth into the championship on the line, the Lords blanked St. Lawrence 4-0 while Redeemer dropped a 5-0 decision to St. Clair.
St. Clair also advanced to the OCAA championship after winning the pool with a 3-0-0 record.
"It was a positive result for the team," said head coach
Alex Bianchi. "Indoor is a totally different game and we only had one warm up match before today. As the day went on, we got better and it's always an honour to represent the college, but even a bigger pleasure to do it at a provincial championship."
Cory Lapointe (Whitby, Ont.) and
Jacklyn Brzezinski (Ajax, Ont.) each had a pair of goals on Tuesday while
Milinda Roblero (Pickering, Ont.) had a single.
The University of Toronto (Mississauga) and Fanshawe advanced to the OCAA championship on Monday, while the remaining three regional championships are scheduled to take place Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
The Durham College men's indoor soccer team's regional championship will take place on Friday, March 9 at Seneca College. The Lords are in a pool with Canadore, Mohawk and Sheridan.
