OSHAWA, Ont. - Nate Paine (Whitby, Ont.)
of the men's indoor soccer team and
Mya Beverley (Oshawa, Ont.) of the women's indoor soccer team have been named the Durham College student-athletes of the week for the period ending March 10.
Paine, a second-year photography major, provided a consistent offensive threat for the Durham Lords indoor soccer team who went 1-2-1 (W-L-T) this past week during the OCAA regional tournament. The speedy forward picked up his first of two goals at the showcase in the Lords 2-0 victory over St. Lawrence, racing down the right wing before sending a threatening cross off a Vikings defender into the back of the net. Paine continued to create offensive chances in the Lords next game versus Conestoga, utilizing his quick bursts of speed in the tight quarters. He picked up his second goal of the tournament outracing the Conestoga defence to a long pass, showing clinical finish sending the ball into the top left corner past the Condors keeper.
Beverley, a first-year emergency services student, displayed outstanding finish for the Lords as they went 2-2 at the OCAA regional's this past week. The dynamic striker opened the tournament with a hat-trick in Durham's 4-0 dismantling of Laurier-Brantford. Her first came off her powerful right foot, while the second was setup by some excellent team passing, and the third was a perfectly placed shot to the lower left corner past the outstretched arms of the Golden Hawks keeper. Beverley then added another two goals in the Lords 6-0 victory over St. Lawrence, this time scoring off the left foot and from a rebound in front of the Vikings net. She rounded our her strong offensive day by providing a well-placed through ball for an assist on the Lords lone goal versus Mohawk.
The Durham College athlete of the week award is presented by Subway located at 2069 Simcoe Street North in Oshawa.
