Becky Tranter was a standout athlete for the Durham Lords, playing women's volleyball from 1999 to 2003. Over her four seasons, she helped lead the Lords to a remarkable 45-6 record in conference play and a 72-31 overall record, consistently placing in the top three of the east division each year. As a two-time OCAA medalist, Becky played a key role in securing a bronze medal in 2000 and a gold medal in 2002, which included a dominant sweep of Cambrian in the championship match, where she was named player of the game.
Becky was known for her versatility on the court, with head coach Stan Marchut trusting her to play any position. In her first two seasons, she represented the Lords at the OCAA all-star games and was named Durham’s women’s volleyball rookie of the year before winning the college’s MVP award the following year. In 2002, she earned the prestigious coaches award and was the inaugural recipient of the Bonnie Ginter-Brown Leadership Award, which recognizes male and female athletes who exemplify outstanding leadership in the pursuit of excellence. She would win this award again in her final season, alongside being honored with the four-year athletic career award.
In addition to her success on the court, Becky excelled academically, earning OCAA All-Academic Awards in all four of her years as a student-athlete. Her leadership extended beyond athletics, as she served as Vice President of Student Athletics and later President of the Student Association (SA). Becky played an instrumental role in promoting health and wellness on campus, leading intramural programs, organizing the CCAA men’s volleyball championship, and advocating for the construction of key athletic facilities, including the Campus Tennis Centre and Campus Ice Centre.
